Presenting the
Waterside Singers
The Waterside Singers are the resident choir of The Park Area Community Centre. Starting off as a group of would be singers who thought they couldnt sing, with the help of a lottery grant funding the "Cant Sing? Neither Can We !" project back in March 2010, we can certainly say that the money was put to good use as we performed all around the Town, for many community events, including our first ever public performance which was also our first ever outdoor performance for the Town Bridge on its 80th Birthday.
Each year we perform at the Christmas show that is held at the community centre, so if you wanted to check us out before coming along, that could be a good place as any to start.
We dont restrict ourselves to any style or genre of music, we've done anything and everything, from Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" with an orchestra, singing in Latin, French, English folk songs, classic easy listening tunes, the obligatory Abba, Rod Stewart, to singing at various community centres and elderly persons homes, We have sung outdoors and inside, sometimes it seems as if nowhere is too small, too large or too full for us to turn up and do our set.
Apart from working on the 2011 Xmas show, we are also limbering up our vocal muscles for the Olympics, and if that doesn't entice you to come along and join in with us, I dont know what else would.
Our choir "uniform" is any shade of blue/water colour on the top, and anything dark on the bottom, we want to be comfortable and relaxed when we sing, so you wear what suits you.
Come along to our rehearsals, we start again in January 9th 2012 at 3pm, We have a small charge of £1.50 which covers expenses such as cd's, music, photocopying and tuition.

We dont expect you to pay the first time you turn up, only if you decide you want to continue with us.

Christmas In The Park Community Concert 2011
Obviously 2012 is all about the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics, and the Waterside Singers are taking part in the Maritime Mix for the Opening Day of the Sailing Games in Weymouth. We are part of a massed choir from all around the South , and we are rehearsing specially comissioned pieces (ours are composed by John Surman) all about the area, with it culminating in sending our best wishes to the next Olympic Country by singing in their own language!!
Its a challenge all right... who would have thought this would have been within our abilities when we first started as a crowd of people who thought they couldnt sing back in March 2010.
Dont get me wrong, its taking work and lots of practice, which is still ongoing. Its still not too late though if you want to join in, you just really need to commit to practicing. There are additional rehearsals for this project on Monday Evenings from 7pm at Littlemoor and Saturdays from 10.30 to 12.30 at various locations around the borough, more details are on our message site, We are also rehearsing the pieces with our own musical director Johanna during our Monday rehearsals. Then there are the massed choir rehearsals that take place every month or so with our passionate conductor Howard Moody. So you can see there is plenty of ways to practice, we even have audio files for people to sing along to if needed. So why not come along and join in, and stun your family and friends when you tell them that you took part in the 2012 Olympics !
