Our beginnings

The Waterside Weymouth Community Forum was established 10 years ago as part of The Weymouth and Portland Borough Councils successful Single Regeneration Bid for the Melcombe Regis area of Weymouth. The Forum worked in partnership with the Borough Council and a range of other organisations to help develop and implement improvement plans for the Park District area, these improvements included, a resident’s parking scheme, a new one way traffic management system and many other environmental enhancements. The Forum continued to establish its place within community with the opening of our Resource Centre located in Ranelagh Road. The Forum was fortunate to secure 3 years core funding from the Lottery, enabling us continue our activities and to go from strength to strength. The Forum further enhanced its facilities by opening a managed indoor recycle and reuse centre, which is continues to be managed by volunteers.

Our status and structure

The Waterside Weymouth Community Forum is a registered Charity. The Forum operates under our own constitutional rules, and those of the Charity Commission. We are governed by a General Committee of 10 members, 6 of which are Charity Trustees. 7 members of our Committee have specific responsibilities which include, Chairman, Vice Chairman, Treasurer, Fundraising Officer, Grants and Funding officer, Environmental Officer, Youth activities officer and Volunteer representative. The General Committee meets once a month, with regular public meetings held at the Community Centre. Our Annual General meeting is held at the end of March each year, at which we elect our General Committee members and honorary officers.

The Community Forum currently employs 1 full time member of staff. The Forum is further supported by a team of approximately 40 Volunteers who support the running of the Community Centre, Charity Shop, fundraising events and the community projects.

The present and future

November 2006 saw the Community Forum take over the former Park Church Building in Chelmsford Street with the aim of establishing the areas first active Community Centre. The Community Forum established a three year development plan for the centre with the objectives of setting up a wide range of activities and events as possible as well as becoming financially self sustaining within this period. To date the Community Forum has increased the centre usage time from 15% to 50% usage time per week. The number of people using the centre when we took over was approx. 200 people per week; it is now up to approx. 475 people per week.

The Community Forum continues to be committed to supporting the Community within the Park Area of Weymouth.
